B-Meets
We are fortunate to be in an area with so many other pools, with dive teams, in such close proximity. I don't know of any other pools in the NVSL that have B-Meets. These meets give our divers, who have not yet placed in an A-Meet, the opportunity to compete with other teams. The judges are a bit more generous at B-Meets and we do not keep team scores.
B-Meets are held on Thursday evenings as follows:

Thursday July 1st  Chesterbrook at AFC
AFC warmups from 5-5:30 Chesterbrook from 5:30-6:00
Meet Starts at 6:00
Thursday July 8th at Dominion Hills
AFC warmups from 5:30-6:00
Meet Starts at 6:00
Thursday July 22nd at Tuckahoe
Warmups from 5:30-6:00
Meet starts at 6:00

Practice Schedule

Until June 25th Practices will be from 4:-5:00 Monday thru Friday

Beginning June 28th

Monday Wednesday and Friday
11:00-12:00, 12:00-1:00 and 5:00-6:00
Tuesday
11:00-12:00 and 12:00-1:00
Thursday
12:00-1:00

Because AFC has such a large dive team, there are 3, 1 hour practice sessions on Monday Wednesday and Friday,  2 practice times on Tuesdays (due to the A-Meets in the evening) and only 1 time on Thursdays (due to Float Day in the morning and B-Meets in the evening).

Divers may choose which practice time they will attend and they should plan to make as many practices as possible. If too many divers choose the same practice time, the coaches will request they practice at a different time that does not conflict with the diver's other activities.

Return

For those of you who are new to the sport of diving, here is a brief introduction to what it's all about.

In the NVSL, divers compete in four age groups, freshman (10 and under), junior (11 & 12), intermediate (13 and 14) and senior (15-18). Age group is determined by the diver's age as of June 1st.
In our A meets, all age groups are required to do a front dive and a back dive and seniors are required to do an inward dive as well.
Freshman will do the required dives and one optional dive. A total of 3 dives.
Juniors will do the required dives and 2 optional dives. A total of 4 dives.
Intermediates will do the required dives and 3 optional dives. A total of 5 dives.
Seniors will do the required dives and 3 optional dives. A total of 6 dives.

The diver may choose the optional dives from any category, but cannot do more than one optional dive from any category.

Our A-Meets are on Tuesday evenings.
For our home meets our warm ups are from 4-5 and then the other team will have the boards from 5-6 and the meet will start at 6:00. The meets usually run about 2 1/2 hours. We encourage all divers to stay for the entire meet to cheer on their team mates.
For the away meets we generally car pool from AFC, leaving in time to arrive at the opponents pool by 4:45. For some of the parents, it is more convenient to drive their divers rather than car pool. After the away meets we usually go to Fudruckers or some place similar as a team.

Divers should bring several towels and a change of clothes.

There are five categories of dives. The forward, back, reverse (sometimes referred to as a gainer), inward and twisting. The dives are rated on difficulty and given a degree of difficulty value (DD). This "DD" is used to calculate the total award given to each dive. When a diver performs a dive, the judges rate that dive on the following criteria, the run (or approach), the take off, the execution of the dive in the air and the entry. The dives are performed in the tuck, pike or straight or free positions.

The forward category (100) includes the front dive and front somersaults. The back  category (200)  includes the back dive and back somersaults. The reverse (sometimes referred to as a gainer) category (300) includes the reverse dive and reverse somersaults. The inward category (400) includes the inward dive and inward somersaults. The twisting category (5000) includes all dives that are done with twists.
For example, a forward dive would be a 101, a forward somersault would be a 102, a forward 1 1/2 somersault would be a 103 and so on. If the dive is done with a twist, there would be a 5 at the beginning, the next number would indicate the direction (forward 1, back 2, reverse 3 and inward 4), the third number indicates a dive (1), a somersault (2), 1 1/2 somersault (3) and a double somersault (4). The final number indicates the twists to be done, 1/2 twist (1), full twist (2), 1 1/2 twist (3) and two twist (4). A twisting(5) forward (1) somersault (2) done with a full twist (2), would be a 5122.
When a diver performs a dive, the judges rate that dive on the following criteria, the run, or approach, the take off, the execution of the dive in the air and the entry.
The run should be smooth and graceful, ending with a hurdle(the maneuver in which the diver jumps from one foot and lands at the end of the board on both feet simultaneously).
The take off should be with both feet leaving the board simultaneously, upright, forceful and balanced.
The execution of the dive should be elevated, smooth, graceful and without a break in position.
The entry into the water should be vertical with the legs together, hands at the side on feet first entries and extended over the head on head first entries, body straight and with minimal splash.
